Changed your mind about your tattoo? Here is what Adelaide locals are doing about it

Changed your mind about your tattoo?

Here is what Adelaide locals are doing about it…

We hear the word "regret" thrown around a lot when it comes to tattoos. In fact, national statistics often highlight how many Australians experience "tattoo regret" at some point in their lives. But at LaserTat, we see things a little differently.

For the vast majority of our clients, it is not about deep, remorseful regret. It is simply about evolution. You are not the same person you were five, ten, or twenty years ago. Your tastes change, your style evolves, and sometimes the art on your skin just does not align with who you are today.

If you find yourself looking at an old piece and thinking, "Should I remove my tattoo?" you are entirely normal, and you are definitely not alone.

this is a look at why Adelaide locals are choosing to undergo laser tattoo removal, and why it is more about a fresh start than fixing a mistake...

1. Making room for better art (fading for cover-ups)

One of the most common reasons clients visit our Port Adelaide clinic is not for complete removal, but for fading. The tattoo industry has progressed incredibly over the last decade. The artists, the techniques, and the styles available today are phenomenal. Just look at the incredible custom work coming out of our sister studio, Black Diamond Tattoo!

Many clients have older, heavy, or dark tattoos taking up prime real estate on their bodies. Instead of settling for a heavy, solid black cover-up, they come to us to lighten the existing ink. Just a few sessions with our advanced Cynosure PicoSure and Q-Switch lasers can fade an old design enough to give a talented tattoo artist a clean canvas. Fading an old tattoo means you are not restricted in your cover-up options; you can finally get the intricate, beautiful piece you actually want.

2. Career changes and professional goals

While many workplaces in Australia are becoming much more accepting of visible tattoos, certain career paths still have strict guidelines. We frequently help clients who are looking to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the police force, or other professions where visible neck, face, or hand tattoos might be a barrier to entry.

Removing a tattoo for a career is not about hiding who you are; it is about removing an obstacle that stands between you and your professional goals. It is a proactive, empowering step toward the future you want to build.

The "it seemed like a good idea at the time" tattoo

We have all been there. The matching tattoos with an ex-partner, the impulsive holiday ink, or the design you picked off a flash wall when you were 18. At the time, it made perfect sense. Now? Not so much.

There is absolutely no shame in outgrowing a tattoo. You do not have to carry a permanent reminder of a fleeting moment if it no longer brings you joy.

Laser tattoo removal offers a way to clear the slate. It is a physical way of letting go of the past and embracing the present.

This client experienced some ink spread and blurring throughout the tattoo and chose to have it removed.

4. Poor execution or fading over time

Sometimes the idea was great, but the execution just did not hit the mark. Tattoos can also spread, blur, or fade unevenly over the years due to sun exposure or the natural ageing of the skin. If a tattoo no longer looks crisp or resembles the original design, it can be frustrating to look at every day. Laser removal allows you to erase the blurry lines and start over.

Ready to take the next step?

If you are tired of looking at a tattoo that does not feel like you anymore, you do not have to live with it forever. Whether you want to completely erase a piece, fade it for a stunning new cover-up, or just explore your options, the team at LaserTat is here to help without any judgement.

We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, professional, and comfortable environment. We will assess your tattoo, discuss your goals, and create a tailored treatment plan using the best laser technology in Adelaide.

Can I get a tattoo removed if I have dark skin?

The complete guide for all skin tones

One of the most common questions we get asked at LaserTat is:

"Is laser tattoo removal safe for my skin tone?"

For a long time, there was a misconception that laser tattoo removal was only effective or safe for people with lighter skin. While it is true that treating darker skin tones requires a more specialised approach and advanced technology, the answer is not straightforward. With the right equipment, the right wavelengths, and an experienced team who understands how to work with your skin type, laser tattoo removal can be performed safely and effectively. But not every clinic has the knowledge or technology to do this well, and choosing the right provider matters more than ever when you have a darker skin tone.

At LaserTat, we believe everyone deserves a fresh start, regardless of their skin type. Here is exactly how we safely and effectively fade and remove tattoos for our clients with darker skin tones…

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale

In the laser industry, we use the Fitzpatrick Scale to classify skin types.

This scale ranges from Type I (very fair skin that always burns and never tans) to Type VI (deeply pigmented dark brown to black skin that never burns). The reason this matters is because lasers target pigment (melanin). Tattoos are made of pigment, but so is your skin.

For clients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI, there is naturally more melanin in the skin. If the wrong laser or incorrect settings are used, the laser might target the skin's natural melanin instead of just the tattoo ink.

This can lead to complications such as hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) or hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin).

This is why a "one size fits all" approach to tattoo removal simply does not work.

The right technology: why wavelengths matter

The secret to safely treating darker skin tones lies in the specific wavelength of the laser.

At LaserTat, we use industry-leading technology including the Cynosure PicoSure, Cynosure RevLite, and Cynosure MedLite lasers.

When treating clients with darker skin tones, we specifically utilise the 1064nm wavelength.

Why? Because the 1064nm wavelength has the lowest melanin absorption rate. This means it can safely bypass the skin's natural pigment and go straight for the dark tattoo ink sitting deeper in the dermis. It allows us to shatter the ink particles effectively and reduce the risk of causing damage to the surrounding skin tissue.

While the 755nm wavelength is highly effective at targeting darker pigments like black, blue, and purple ink, it isn’t always the safest option for every skin tone.

In clients with higher levels of natural melanin, this wavelength can also be absorbed by the surrounding skin, increasing the risk of unwanted pigmentation changes such as hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation. For this reason, we take a tailored approach and may opt for alternative settings or wavelengths to ensure both safe and effective results.

Our approach: slow, steady, and safe

When it comes to tattoo removal on darker skin, patience is your best friend. Our priority is always the health and integrity of your skin. Here is how we adjust our approach to ensure the safest possible journey.

1. Reduced laser settings

We always lean on the side of caution. For darker skin types, we use lower, more conservative laser settings. While this might mean the fading process takes a little longer, it significantly reduces the risk of blistering, scarring, or pigmentation changes. We want your skin to look as healthy and natural as possible once the ink is gone.

2. Extended time between sessions

Normally, we recommend waiting 6 to 8 weeks between laser sessions. However, for clients with darker skin tones, we extend this waiting period to 12 weeks or more.

Your body's lymphatic system does the heavy lifting by flushing out the shattered ink particles. Giving your body more time between sessions not only allows for more ink to fade naturally, but it also gives the skin's melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment) ample time to recover and stabilise. This longer healing window is crucial for preventing hypopigmentation.

3. Comprehensive consultations

Before we even touch a laser to your skin, we conduct a thorough consultation. We assess your skin type, the density of the ink, the age of the tattoo, and your medical history. We will walk you through the entire process, set realistic expectations, and tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.

4. When we may need to say no

While we can safely treat the vast majority of clients with darker skin tones, there are situations where we may advise against proceeding, at least with certain ink colours.

The most common scenario involves coloured tattoos on Fitzpatrick Type V or VI skin.

Here's why: removing coloured ink requires shorter wavelengths. Red ink, for example, is best targeted by the 532nm wavelength. The problem is that 532nm has a significantly higher melanin absorption rate than 1064nm. On skin with elevated levels of natural melanin, using this wavelength carries a high risk of hypopigmentation, which is permanent or long-lasting lightening of the skin that can be very difficult to treat.

In these cases, the risk to your skin simply outweighs the benefit of removing the ink, and we will not proceed. This isn't about the technology failing. It's about us refusing to compromise your skin's integrity.

We will always be upfront with you at consultation. If we cannot safely treat your tattoo, we would rather tell you honestly than risk causing permanent skin damage.

Your skin is in safe hands

Tattoo removal is a journey, and we are here to support you every step of the way. You do not have to live with a tattoo that no longer represents who you are just because you were worried about your skin tone. With the right technology (like our 1064nm wavelength lasers), an expert team, and a patient, tailored approach, you can achieve amazing results safely.

let's discuss the safest and most effective treatment plan for your unique skin.

The evolution of tattoo removal: How LaserTat has changed the industry since 2012

The evolution of tattoo removal: How LaserTat has changed the industry since 2012

When we first opened the doors to LaserTat in 2012, the world of tattoo removal looked very different. Back then, many people simply did not believe that a tattoo could actually be removed. Tattoos were considered strictly permanent, and the idea of a laser safely erasing ink from the skin felt like science fiction to most.

Fast forward to today, and laser tattoo removal has become a mainstream, highly trusted process. As Adelaide’s most trusted laser tattoo removal clinic, we have had a front row seat to this incredible evolution. We have seen trends come and go, technology advance in leaps and bounds, and thousands of clients reclaim their skin.

Where it all began for LaserTat

Our founder, Amanda McKinnon, was inspired to dive into the world of laser tattoo removal by her husband Kelly, a well respected tattoo artist in Adelaide. It was a perfect partnership: he puts them on, and she takes them off.

Amanda purchased her first laser tattoo removal machine in 2012 and set up shop in the historical port side town of Port Adelaide. In those early days, the biggest hurdle was education. We spent a lot of time explaining the science behind laser removal to clients who were skeptical that their unwanted ink could truly disappear.

As our clients began to see real, undeniable results, word of mouth spread. Trust in the process grew, and so did our clinic. Today, LaserTat has expanded into a dedicated space with three treatment rooms and a team that has doubled in size to meet the growing demand. We are incredibly proud to have performed over 10,000 treatments, helping people from all walks of life feel comfortable in their own skin.

The changing trends in unwanted ink

The types of tattoos people want removed have shifted dramatically over the last decade. In the early 2010s, our clinic saw a heavy influx of clients wanting to remove specific trends from the late 90s and early 2000s. We treated countless heavy tribal pieces, lower back designs, and Southern Cross tattoos that people felt they had simply outgrown.

As the tattoo industry itself evolved, so did our clientele. We began seeing a huge rise in clients wanting to fade their existing tattoos specifically to make room for new, higher quality artwork. Fading for cover ups became a massive part of our business, working closely with local tattoo artists to give them the perfect blank canvas.

Today, the landscape has shifted again. Recent statistics show that one in five Australians now have at least one tattoo, and the demand for removal has surged by over 440 percent in the last ten years. We are now performing many more complete removals for clients who want a completely fresh start. We have also seen a significant rise in the removal of cosmetic tattoos, such as eyebrow tattooing and scalp micropigmentation (SMP), as beauty trends change and people seek a more natural look.

How technology has revolutionised the process

The biggest driver behind the surge in tattoo removal is the incredible advancement in laser technology. In the past, older lasers were often slow, limited in the colours they could treat, and carried a higher risk of skin damage.

At LaserTat, we have always invested in the absolute best technology available. We use cutting edge Cynosure lasers, specifically the Q-Switch and PicoSure models. This combination of technology is a game changer for our clients.

Having multiple wavelengths allows us to safely and effectively target every single ink colour across the spectrum. The Q-Switch laser penetrates deep to fade stubborn ink deposits, while the PicoSure laser uses rapid picosecond technology to shatter difficult colours like blues and greens. This means we can remove tattoos quicker, safer, and more effectively than ever before, regardless of the ink colour or skin type.

Boosting your results with extra treatments

As our understanding of the body's healing process has grown, we have introduced new ways to help our clients get the best possible results. The laser's job is to shatter the ink into tiny particles, but it is actually your body's lymphatic system that flushes those particles away.

To speed up this natural clearing process, we now offer supplementary treatments that work hand in hand with our laser services. We utilise skin needling to help break down scar tissue and loosen trapped ink, allowing the laser to penetrate more effectively. We also offer lymphatic massage, which stimulates the body's natural waste removal system to clear away the shattered ink particles much faster.

These extra treatments not only boost the fading process between laser sessions but also keep the skin healthy, smooth, and strong.

We look forward to seeing you at your next appointment!

Boost your tattoo removal results with Skin Needling and Lymphatic Massage

How Skin Needling & Lymphatic Massage Can Seriously Boost Your Tattoo Removal Results

Getting a tattoo removed is much more than just showing up for your laser appointments. Believe it or not, your body does most of the heavy lifting.

The laser breaks up the ink, but your lymphatic system is what actually carries it away. Therefore, the healthier and more active your skin and lymphatic system are, the faster your tattoo fades.

That is exactly why skin needling and lymphatic massage are becoming popular add-ons during tattoo removal. They do not replace laser treatments — they boost them.

So… what is skin needling?

Skin needling (aka microneedling) uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. Don’t worry — it sounds scarier than it is. These tiny pinpricks kick your skin’s natural healing into high gear, boosting collagen, elastin, and fresh skin cell growth.

Why it helps with tattoo removal?

  • It helps the laser reach stubborn ink

Older tattoos or tattoos with scar tissue can make the skin thicker or uneven. Needling helps break down that tissue so the laser can get to the ink more easily.

  • It boosts ink fading between sessions

The micro-injuries boost blood flow and activate your lymphatic system — it’s your body’s signal to start clearing things out. Better circulation = quicker ink removal.

  • It helps the skin repair itself

Laser removal can leave the skin feeling dry or a little rough. Needling encourages collagen production to keep your skin smooth, healthy, and strong.

  • It loosens up deep or stubborn ink

Ink can be trapped under fibrous tissue and needling can help break that up, making your laser treatments even more effective.

What is lymphatic massage?

It’s a soft, relaxing massage that gets your lymphatic system moving — that’s the system in charge of clearing out impurities from your body. Since broken ink particles are treated like waste, this helps your body get rid of them quicker.

Why it helps with tattoo removal?

  • Speeds up fading

By getting your lymph moving, lymphatic massage helps your body flush out those tiny broken-up ink particles that can help tattoos fade faster between sessions.

  • Reduces swelling and inflammation

Laser sessions can leave the area feeling warm or puffy. Lymphatic massage calms everything down and supports quicker recovery.

  • Gives your immune system a little extra push

A healthy lymphatic system = more active immune cells.

More active immune cells = faster progress.

  • Keeps the skin happy

Better circulation leads to healthier skin overall — that is exactly what you want when you are booking multiple laser sessions.

LaserTat’s Fresh Start Program: Client success stories

In 2019, LaserTat’s director Amanda McKinnon launched The Fresh Start Program with a powerful mission: to help individuals move on from painful or traumatic reminders tattooed on their skin and embrace a more hopeful future.

Through free and discounted laser tattoo removal, this initiative supports people committed to personal growth but lacking the financial means to take that first step. Since its inception, the program has helped numerous individuals remove their tattoos, many of them overcoming addiction, incarceration, trauma or personal hardship. LaserTat has supported more than 50 clients in their tattoo removal journey through this initiative and we continue to do so today. Many of the clients in our program cannot be publicly identified due to privacy, confidentiality and in some cases their personal safety - matters we take extremely seriously. All clients featured in this blog have given explicit permission for us to share their images, results and the personal circumstances behind their tattoos. Continue reading for firsthand stories of our client’s strength, courage and healing made possible by through The Fresh Start Program.

Kieren’s first step to change

The Fresh Start Program was originally piloted on Kieren, a 25-year-old male who was on home detention after completing a prison sentence at a South Australian correctional facility. He had a strong desire to turn his life around and he felt that the key to this change was to bid farewell to his face tattoos.

“In my youth, I went down the wrong path and made some bad choices. I got face tattoos that I now regret, I ended up in jail and now I want to turn my life around and get these face tattoos removed. I now want to get my life back on track, gain employment, and [ultimately] move forward with my life and put my past behind me. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this program." - Kieren

Lainy’s confidence restored

Iron stain tattoo removal

Lainy applied for the Fresh Start Program, seeking help after an iron infusion that left her with staining on her arm. This profoundly affected Lainy, causing her to experience daily looming self-consciousness. Determined to take her bodily autonomy back, she took the leap and applied to participate in the program.

“The Fresh Start Program has changed my life in so many ways. The stain has faded almost completely in a big patch on my arm, and the rest of the fading is so significant that I rarely get comments or questions anymore. So not only has the fresh start program helped me cosmetically, but financially it has been a lifesaver. I am so grateful to LaserTat for their generosity and compassion, because if not for that, I never would have been able to have this treatment or have the results I’ve gotten.” - Lainy

Joseph’s journey and growth

Neck laser tattoo removal

Joseph sought a fresh start through the program to rid himself of his gang-affiliated tattoos, which had become a barrier in moving on from his past. Closing the last chapter of his old life became Joseph's priority, and he was determined to create a new, positive image for himself. He didn't want his children to be affected by his tattoos. Joseph had stayed true to his goal of complete rehabilitation and has achieved amazing results.

“The program is one of a kind giving people like myself the opportunity to rehabilitate and integrate back into society while removing the remnants of a past life. Throughout the last 12 months of my tattoo removal journey, I have felt nothing but supported by Amanda and the team at LaserTat. They make you feel like a human and not judged by your past.

Neck laser tattoo removal

In my youth I made some poor choices, which found me a place in prison. Being out of prison and creating a new life for myself and my family, I knew it was important to remove some of my tattoos to keep moving forward. This wouldn’t have been possible if I didn’t have access to a program like this. Coming from the prison system, having access to a program like this would be so beneficial to hundreds of people registered with OARS or other foundations supporting people in the community who are survivors of domestic violence, ex-gang members, or have simply made poor choices. As someone who has been given a fresh start, I can not commend and thank Amanda & her team enough.” - Joseph

This represented his dedication to personal growth, redemption, and leaving his past behind. Bradley knew that real change comes from within, and he was ready to embrace a fresh start.

“If it wasn't for LaserTat I wouldn't be able to move on from my old life. I served 8 years in prison after making some really bad choices. In prison I made a change, I didn't want that life anymore and in order to make my move I had to get my face tattoos removed”.

“I didn't want to look like a monster anymore, I wanted a quiet life with a family and to have fun and now I have been out for nearly a year and I'm soaring. I can now pick my daughter up from school without her getting embarrassed about my face and I feel like a new person. LaserTat gave me an opportunity to get my life back and I'll be forever grateful for them #bestlasertat around.” - Bradley

Curt’s determination for a new career

Curt began the removal process to pursue a career in the Australian Defence Force. He first applied for the ADF in April 2019 and was advised that their policy was that they would not accept any visible tattoos from the collar up. Curt was heavily tattooed on his neck, head and face as he had been a tattoo artist for 10+ years. Curt’s journey to remove all his visible tattoos was no easy ride, in fact it was probably one of the toughest we have seen within the Fresh Start program.

Curt also undertook many other tasks to better his chances of acceptance including completing an ADF preparation Maths course at TAFE SA, bringing his health and fitness up to speed and he also had his stretched ear lobes surgically stitched up.

”For the past 12 years I have worked in the tattoo industry and as a result of that I gathered quite a few tattoos along the way! After getting married and having 2 children I felt the need for a bit of stability and consistency both in work hours and financially, so the thought of a defence force career popped up again and my long….long journey of tattoo removal began. Amanda and the girls at LaserTat are amazing, have helped me, and encouraged me the whole way through the process even on the days that I didn't want to deal with another session they made it as comfortable and friendly as possible and without that I may have not made it all this way. I cannot recommend LaserTat enough to anyone wanting to remove a little old tattoo or to help completely change your life like they have in my instance.” – Curt

A Story of Survival and Strength

LaserTat was approached by this client who was burdened with a face tattoo that had been forcibly tattooed without her consent. As a result she has faced hardship with employment opportunities and has had to face the judgemental views of others within her community. We are honoured to have helped her remove this traumatic reminder of her past, and move on to a better, brighter future.

face tattoo removal

“I basically had this giant reminder on my face of the worst possible time in my life. It’s all I saw when I looked in the mirror. To be honest it’s all anyone saw when they looked at me. I wanted to make progress towards a better life for myself and my family I couldn't get anyone to take me seriously because of the tattoo. I was never going to be able to move forward with the tattoo on my face. And financially it was something so totally out of the realm of possibilities for me”.

“Every now and then I catch myself in the mirror and I remember almost a whole different world that I have come from. I have confidence and I no longer think the worst about people. It has impacted my life from simple conversations with strangers, interacting with medical staff and things like  job opportunities. I can now feel optimistic about the future” - Anonymous

What's the Best Time Of Year to Start Laser Tattoo Removal?

Thinking about getting a tattoo removed? You’re not alone. One thing many people don’t realise is that timing can make a big difference to your removal journey.

At LaserTat, we often get asked “Is there a better time of year to start laser tattoo removal?”
The short answer? Yes — and it’s usually during the cooler months.

Let’s dive into why!

1. Less sun exposure

During the cooler months you’re naturally covering up more and spending less time in direct sunlight — making aftercare much easier and safer. Freshly lasered skin is extra sensitive to UV rays. If you expose treated skin to the sun too soon after a treatment, you risk adverse responses such as:

  • Hyperpigmentation (dark spots)

  • Hypopigmentation (light spots)

2. Protection of your natural skin tone

Maintaining your natural skin tone is preferred for effective laser tattoo removal. Treating on your natural skin tone helps prevent hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation, ensuring consistent results. With fewer outdoor activities and sunbathing in cooler months, you can preserve your skin's integrity and maximize treatment effectiveness.

3. Comfortable healing process

After laser tattoo removal, the treated area may feel similar to a sunburn, requiring gentle care and protection. The cooler temperatures of autumn and winter help alleviate discomfort, offering a more manageable healing process without the added discomfort of summer heat and sweat. You can have treatments with ease, knowing you won't exacerbate existing sunburns or discomfort.

4. You’ll be summer ready

Starting laser tattoo removal now sets the stage for your future transformations. Since tattoo removal takes time, starting in the cooler months gives you a head start to see major fading (or even full removal) by the time the next summer rolls around! Whether opting for a cover-up tattoo or aiming for complete removal, beginning the journey now provides a head start towards achieving desired results before baring skin in warmer weather.

5. Start today and don’t look back

It's important to remember that laser tattoo removal does take time, so starting now will ensure you reach your desired results sooner. For many, living with a tattoo they don't love is challenging enough. Life is too short to postpone taking action. Don't look back and wish you had started months earlier. Initiating the process now and reaching your goal sooner is a decision you'll appreciate.

6. Avoid the peak season rush

Tattoo removal tends to become more popular in the warmer months of spring and summer, when people start thinking about baring more skin. This seasonal demand often leads to busier clinic schedules and longer wait times. Starting your treatment in the cooler months not only helps you avoid the rush but also gives you more freedom to choose appointment times that work best for you.

But can you start tattoo removal in summer?

Of course — we perform laser tattoo removal year-round at LaserTat. If summer’s the only time you can start, we’ll give you extra careful aftercare instructions like:

  • Wearing SPF 50+ on the area daily

  • Covering the tattoo physically (bandages, clothing)

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure, excess sweating and swimming in bodies of water

Just know that healing might take a little extra care!

Quick tips to maximise your results all year round

  • Stay consistent with your session schedule

  • Follow aftercare closely (no picking, scratching or tanning)

  • Keep your immune system healthy — good hydration, nutrition and exercise can help your body remove ink

  • Be patient — real progress happens between sessions!

Don't let another year pass without taking the first step towards removing or fading your tattoo. We're dedicated to guiding you through your journey with expertise and care. Seize the opportunity to embrace the chill and schedule your appointment today. The cooler months won't last forever, but the results of your decision will!

Celebrity Tattoo Removal Transformations – The reasons why they went under the laser!

Tattoos often symbolise personal stories, relationships, or significant moments in our lives. However as time passes and we evolve, so can our feelings about these designs on our skin. Celebrities, despite their fame and fortune are no exception – they are just as human as the rest of us. They too, experience the evolutions of life and undergo tattoo removal for reasons that can resonate with many of us. Read on as we explore some of the famous faces who have decided to go on their own tattoo removal journeys, and discover their common motivations that we can all relate to!

Pete Davidson - Saying goodbye to a lifetime of tattoos.

Pete Davidson tattoo removal

Pete Davidson has been open about his decision to remove nearly all of his tattoos! He shared how his life changed after getting sober, saying, “I got sober and I saw myself in the mirror and I was like, nah, who that? I was like, I got to change it up a little bit.’”

This reason for removing his tattoos is something we can all understand. Sometimes you grow into someone new through your life experiences and your body needs to reflect that evolution.

For Pete, the decision wasn’t just about aesthetics. He admitted that the lengthy makeup sessions to cover his tattoos for acting roles also became a hassle. He’s been completely upfront about how the process feels, describing it as “burning off layers of skin,” and also emphasised the importance of really thinking about your tattoo choices before getting inked.

While Pete’s description captures how the process can feel, it's important to note that laser tattoo removal doesn’t actually burn the skin. The laser breaks down ink particles beneath the top layers of skin - and while the treated area often feels similar to a sunburn afterward – the process of ink removal is largely internal, and is removed via the lymphatic system.

Angelina Jolie - Erasing a past love.

Angelina Jolie tattoo removal

Actress Angelina Jolie once had her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton’s name tattooed on her upper arm. After their divorce in 2003, she chose to fade the tattoo and replace it with the coordinates of her children’s birthplaces—a meaningful and healing transformation.

We see this often in our clinic. Removing tattoos linked to past relationships can be a symbolic way to close a chapter in life.

Pamela Anderson - Removing the famous barbed wire.

For those of you paying close attention, you may have noticed that Pamela Anderson’s iconic barb wire tattoo has faded over the years! Pamela initially got this after she was inspired by her role in the 1996 movie Barb Wire. Years later, she decided to remove it, saying she was “over it” and preferred a cleaner look.

This is something else we see being a huge motivator for our clients – as we get older, our aesthetic preferences evolve along with us.

Jessica Origliasso - Outgrowing a half-sleeve.

With motivations very similar to those of Pamela Anderson, Jessica Origliasso—one half of The Veronicas—decided to start removing her half sleeve in late 2014. She shared on social media that she had simply "grown out of" the appeal of her tattoos, writing, "People grow and change through their journey in life." Having been inked at 18, she explained that while she had loved and lived with her tattoos for years, she had "outgrown it" and wanted something "more relevant to my soul now."

We hear this a lot—tattoos that once felt like a perfect fit don’t always last forever, and that’s okay!

Megan Fox - Letting go of negative influences.

Megan Fox tattoo removal

Actress Megan Fox once had a portrait of Marilyn Monroe inked on her forearm as a tribute piece. She later decided to begin her own laser journey on this tattoo, feeling the piece brought with it a kind of "negative energy" linked to the iconic Hollywood star.

Sometimes removing a tattoo is more than just about the art—it’s about letting go of something that no longer serves you.

Mark Wahlberg - A clean slate for maturity.

Mark Wahlburg tattoo removal

Mark Wahlberg made headlines when he decided to have several of his tattoos removed, including a portrait of Bob Marley on his arm. During interviews on The Graham Norton Show and The Late Late Show with James Corden, he explained that he had about 8 or 9 tattoos removed from his neck, stomach, back, arms, and legs. The process took five years and was “incredibly painful”. He even joked that it felt like "hot bacon grease getting flicked on you over and over." When he was asked why he decided to remove them he said “maturity” and “sensibility”, ultimately it was a decision about personal growth. “Shit happens at 40,” he joked, admitting that as a young man, he thought his tattoos would always hold deep meaning, but as he grew older, they didn’t fit who he had become. His role as a father also played a big part in his decision, with him stating that it was getting harder to explain his tattoos to his kids.

Mark’s story is a reminder that as we go through life, our sense of self changes and sometimes that means changing the things that we thought would last forever.

Victoria Beckham – Bye bye blow out tattoo.

Victoria Beckham tattoo removal

Victoria Beckham has been lasering multiple tattoos for a few years now, including one of her husband’s initials on her wrist. Her decision to remove this tattoo sparked media rumours about their relationship, Victoria clarified that it wasn’t about their marriage—it was simply because she was “sick of the tattoo.” She explained in an interview "I had these tattoos a long, long time ago, and they weren’t exactly delicate”. She also compared her tattoos to her husband's, who is known to have intricately designed pieces created by world-renowned artists. "My tattoos were just a little bit thick, a little bit bleeding, and not looking as pretty.”

Just like many of the tattoos we see come through our doors at LaserTat, even celebrities with access to the world’s best artists can experience aging and blowout of their tattoos. This is a very common reason for tattoo removal.

Colin Farrell - Professional life and personal change.

Actor Colin Farrell shared on The Late Late Show with James Corden that he decided to remove several tattoos, especially because they became a hassle during film productions. He explained that sitting in makeup for hours to cover them up was just too much.

For many of our clients, tattoos can sometimes interfere with their professional life—whether it’s a strict uniform policy or simply not fitting the new career path they’re on. The choice to remove tattoos to achieve a look that better aligns with a professional life is a popular one!

How to prepare for your laser treatment

We get it—laser tattoo removal isn’t exactly a walk in the park. But at LaserTat, we’ve been perfecting the art of tattoo removal since 2012. With over a decade of experience, we know how to make your treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. A little preparation goes a long way, so here are our top tips to help you get ready for your session:

1. Fuel and Hydrate Your Body

A light snack and plenty of water before your session can make a world of difference. Eating a little something helps prevent light-headedness during the session, and staying hydrated supports your body’s healing process. Proper hydration also aids your lymphatic system in flushing out ink particles. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate you and slow healing.

2. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is crucial for your body’s recovery and regeneration processes. Make sure you get a solid 8 hours before and after your laser treatment to help your body heal and expel ink particles more effectively.

3. Prepare the Treatment Area

For the best laser results, please shave the area being treated the night before or on the morning of your appointment. If you’re using numbing cream, shave first to ensure proper absorption. Apply the cream 2 hours before your session, wrap it in glad wrap, and arrive with it on—we’ll clean it off before starting.

Don’t worry if you forget to shave—we can take care of it at your appointment.

4. Health Considerations

If you’re feeling unwell—whether it’s a cold, flu, cold sore, or any other illness—it’s better to reschedule. Your immune system needs to be at full capacity to effectively expel ink particles.

Also, please let us know if you’ve started any new medications or have developed new medical conditions. This helps us tailor your treatment for your safety.

5. Protect Your Skin

For at least 24-48 hours before your appointment, avoid self-tanners, perfumes, lotions, deodorants, exfoliants, and retinoids, as they can increase sensitivity or cause irritation during laser treatment.

Additionally, avoid direct sunlight on the area before and after your session:

  • Before Treatment: Sunburnt skin cannot be treated with laser.

  • After Treatment: Keep the area out of direct sunlight while healing and use sunscreen between treatments to protect the skin from getting sunburnt. Plan your sessions around outdoor activities to avoid complications.

6. Timing Matters for EVERYONE

We understand that timing can make a big difference, especially during your menstrual cycle. During this time, pain sensitivity can be heightened, which may make treatments feel more intense. If you're concerned, feel free to let us know—we’re happy to reschedule to a more comfortable time for you.

7. Choose Loose-Fitting Clothing

After your treatment, the area can be sensitive, and tight clothing can cause irritation and friction. Opt for comfy, loose-fitting clothes to keep the area comfortable post-treatment.

8. Plan for Aftercare

After your treatment, your skin will need some extra TLC. To make your recovery as smooth as possible:

  • Have ice packs or a cold compress ready at home to soothe the area.

  • Stock up on fragrance-free moisturizers and healing balms like Aquaphor or Bepanthen.

  • Wear sun-protective clothing or use a high-SPF sunscreen on the treated area once healed.

We’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions, but a little prep goes a long way!

9. Arrive a Little Early

Arriving about 10 minutes before your appointment gives you time to fill out any paperwork, ask questions, and relax before your session starts. It also ensures that you don’t feel rushed, which can help with any pre-treatment nerves.

10. Don’t Hesitate to Ask Questions

Expanding our Fresh Start Laser Tattoo Removal Program to new STATES!

We’re thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter for LaserTat’s Fresh Start program! Our mission has always been to support individuals who want a fresh beginning by removing tattoos that no longer align with who they are today, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds or with tattoos tied to a difficult past. Now, we’re making this program accessible in even more places across Australia.

Growing our reach to Western Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria

We’re proud to be teaming up with four highly respected clinics to bring Fresh Start to communities outside South Australia:

  • SW Tattoo Removal in Western Australia

  • White Rabbit Tattoo Removal in Tasmania

  • Swift Tattoo Removal in Victoria

  • Paramount Tattoo Removal in NSW

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Jess and Hayden from SW Tattoo Removal at our clinic here in South Australia. After a collaborative visit, Amanda, Jess and Hayden travelled to Melbourne, where they met up with Kelly from Swift Tattoo Removal and Jorja from White Rabbit Tattoo Removal. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, align our visions, and discuss how best to expand Fresh Start into these new states. This expansion will allow us to help even more people seeking a positive change and fresh outlook.

Sharing our core values

Why Fresh Start Program Matters

The Fresh Start program exists to help those in our community who face unique barriers due to tattoos that no longer reflect who they are or the direction they wish to take. Our goal is to remove tattoos that have become a painful reminder of the past, offering a path toward healing and new beginnings. Through the Fresh Start Program, we support:

  • Survivors of Family and Domestic Violence, Immigration Detention, or Human Trafficking: Many people are tattooed against their will under these circumstances. The Fresh Start program offers them the opportunity to reclaim their bodies, removing tattoos that may have been forced upon them.

  • Individuals Who Have Recently Completed a Jail Sentence: A fresh start after prison can be challenging, especially when tattoos act as constant reminders of the past. This program gives those who are committed to moving forward a chance to remove these reminders and reintegrate into society more comfortably.

  • People with Visible or Offensive Tattoos: Tattoos on visible areas like the face, neck, hands, and head can severely limit employment opportunities, especially if they contain offensive content. Fresh Start provides these individuals with a chance to improve their job prospects and stability.

  • Former Gang or Biker Club Members: For those looking to leave gang or club affiliations behind, tattoo removal can play an essential role in cutting ties with the past and moving toward a safer, more positive future.

  • People with Racist Tattoos: Some individuals want to remove tattoos that represent old beliefs or affiliations that no longer align with who they are. Fresh Start enables them to move forward by removing symbols tied to these beliefs.

  • Children and Teenagers Under 18 Tattooed Without Consent: We believe young people who were tattooed without permission deserve the chance to move on without being defined by a decision they did not make for themselves.

  • Cancer Survivors with Radiation Marks or Medical Tattoos: For those who have undergone cancer treatment or other medical procedures, Fresh Start offers removal of radiation tattoo marks, helping to ease reminders of a challenging medical journey.

Through this program, we’re giving individuals the opportunity to change their lives by starting fresh. However, we also know that providing this service to the right individuals is essential to keeping the program impactful and sustainable. For this reason, Fresh Start has an application process to ensure that those who qualify for our program are genuinely committed to creating positive change. This approach allows us to focus our efforts and resources on those who need it most.

How to Apply for the Fresh Start Program

If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, we encourage you to apply! You’ll find details on the application process, along with information about each participating clinic, on our website here. We carefully review each application to ensure our resources are directed to those who are ready for a fresh start and a positive path forward.

This expansion is a huge step forward for the Fresh Start program, and we’re incredibly proud to bring it to more people across Australia. With the help of our committed partners, we’re ready to offer more people the opportunity for a fresh start and make a positive impact across more communities.
